5. TNF Knowledge
Wear results were obtained using a four-ball tribometer.
1)The phosphorous concentrations of sample oils containing degraded ZnDTP were almost the same as those of nondegraded ZnDTP-containing oils.
2)Many types of phosphorous compounds were found in the degraded oils, whereby the following degraded compounds were observed in the greatest quantities: disulfide (DS), trisulfide (TS), monosulfide (MS), Zinc dialkylmonothiophosphate (ZnMTP), and their further-oxidized forms.
3)The wear rate at 100 rpm was almost constant with slightly degraded oils ([CHP]/[ZnDTP] > 2).
4)The wear rate at 300 rpm gradually increased with degradation with slightly degraded oils ([CHP]/[ZnDTP] > 2).
5)The wear rate increased appreciably with the more highly degraded oils, exceeding the wear rate of the additive-free base oil.
6)As long as enough ZnDTP remained in the oil, despite its co-existence with other degraded phosphorus compounds, a surface protective layer containing phosphorus formed, giving a low wear rate.
7)Wear acceleration by the degraded-ZnDTP-containing oils was due to a lack of formation of the phosphorus-containing surface layer and high concentrations of sulfur, which in turn resulted in corrosive-like chemical wear due to the reaction with sulfur.
